A call to action
OUR CLIMATE - NOT YOUR BUSINESS!
Corporations are turning our climate crisis into their business opportunity!
By applying political pressure, championing false solutions, and using money to overwhelm the debate, corporations are trying to convince the world’s population and the world’s leaders that they can solve the climate crisis, and that we ought to listen to them. Sadly, many buy their lies about green capitalism, corporate responsibility, carbon trading, carbon capture and sequestration, and carbon offset schemes.
On December 11th COP15 is having their Business Day, discussing Business’s role in ‘stopping global warming’. Both the UN and many other governments have already expressed that they can’t imagine making an agreement in Copenhagen without a corporate blessing. Such statements show how strong and deep corporate control is, especially by oil and coal companies who stand to lose the most.
Corporations are not part of the solution, They are the problem! Right now, 122 of the world’s companies are responsible for 80% of the total global CO2 emissions. We are constantly told that we have to save water, turn the heat down and change our light bulbs, while their pollution goes almost unnoticed. This charade will continue until we hold these corporations responsible for their actions.
With corporations and politics going hand in hand, it unlikely that these corporate climate criminals will be held responsible for their actions. On the contrary, we see these industrial capitalists portrayed as part of the solution, and not as the cause of the crisis. False solutions such as carbon trading, clean development projects, and technological fixes funded by public money, have one thing in common (besides the fact that none of them in fact works and many are harmful for climate, people and surrounding ecosystems). They create new markets which the corporations hope will lead to massive profits. In the end of 2008, the global carbon market was worth around 90 billion Euros.
None of this serves any purpose other then profit and the continuation of capitalism, while CO2 emission increases, and companies keep putting profit above everything. This focus on growth and profit, is incompatible with our planet, with its capacity to regenerate, and with our vital need for quick and effective solutions to the crisis. Solutions can only be reached if priorities are radically changed, putting people before profit and stopping corporate involvement in the search for real solutions to the climate crisis. There is no infinite economic growth on a finite planet!
There is only one way:
Stop corporate influence on the climate change discussion!
Drop the market solutions!
People before profit!
The 11th of December is the day of business at the climate meeting in Copenhagen.
DON’T BUY THE LIE – take direct action against the root of the climate crisis on the 11th of December.
